Movie Night: Documentary Film Follows Gay Palestinian Lives

Share the Love

GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, April 12 with a documentary film following the lives of three gay Palestinian men and their female friend living in Israel.  The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors each month.  Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center.  Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.

Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South).  Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in general press releases.  But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series.  Or find titles and more information online: www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources.

About the April 12 film: This fascinating 2015 documentary follows 15 months in the lives of three gay Palestinian men and their female friend residing in Tel-Aviv, pursing equal civil rights.  “There is a strong camaraderie within this quartet, and though director Jake Witzenfeld’s film focuses on the complexities of what it means to be a gay Arab man who is also an Israeli citizen, it is the easy rapport among these friends that humanizes the film and elevates it beyond its point-and-shoot aesthetic.”  Chicago Tribune (Not Rated)

Save the date for the next film in the monthly series on Thursday, May10.  This 2003 documentary chronicles six decades in the lives of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, two women known as the founders of the modern lesbian civil rights movement, tracing the emergence of lesbians from the fear of discovery to the expectation of equality.  With incisive interviews, rare archival images and warmhearted humor, the film reveals their inspiring public work, as well as their charming private relationship.  When they courageously launched the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955, it became the first public organization for lesbians in America.  (Not rated)

Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.

The LGBTQ Resource Center is a project of the non-profit Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library.  The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family.  Find out more about the Resource Center, the Circle of Friends and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/gpl or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.
