Press Release from Equality Florida:

The Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) is one of the most powerful entities in Florida politics – and most people whose lives it can impact have never heard of it. Every 20 years this Commission is formed and made up of political appointees and Florida’s Attorney General. It is granted the power to propose sweeping changes to the Florida Constitution, which are then presented to voters on the 2018 ballot.

Equality Florida is tracking two dangerous proposals, supported by Florida’s leading anti-LGBTQ crusaders, that just this week were heard in CRC Committees:

Proposal 22 – Repealing Privacy Protections: Deceptively couched as an “update” to the Florida Constitution’s privacy protections, if passed this proposal would radically gut Floridians’ constitutional right to privacy. It would carve away the elements of the privacy right that support women’s reproductive choice and that have been used in federal cases to block government intrusion into our bedrooms and our marriages.

Proposal 95 – An Attack on Local Protections: This measure threatens to repeal local LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinances that protect nearly 60% of Floridians from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and it threatens to block any new efforts to protect our families through city or county governments. It could also undermine conversion therapy bans that have been passed around the state.

Both of these proposals were rejected in committee, but they could be revived for a final vote in front of the full CRC at any moment. The CRC is about to begin a statewide tour to hear more from the public about what direction they should take for Florida. We need YOU to come make your voice heard!
