In a recent article in Outsports,  Florida State University sophmore Aidan Faminoff told his coming out story. He says that, while he knew he was gay in the sixth grade, he hesitated to come out. In high school, the British Columbia native discovered a passion for diving, but still felt he was hiding a part of himself.

“I was escaping being with the “guys,” but also I was still hiding my true self,” he says. “Diving was a way to get my mind off of all the emotions and feelings of not expressing who I really was.”

While he came out to a few close friends in senior year, he truly found his courage when he came to Florida State University. “I realized I was completely comfortable around my teammates and I was more than just a diver to them. I felt I was like family and they accepted all of me, including my offbeat parts.”

Faminoff decided to come out for National Coming Out Day on October 11, 2016, via social media. He says he received numerous messages of support from friends and family, and his experiences have inspired him to help other closeted individuals accept themselves.

Says Faminoff, “I feel the best I have ever felt being accepted, welcomed and loved among my peers and teammates.”
