$300,000 Awarded to 10 LGBTQ+ Organizations in Broward County

In a concerted effort to address discrimination and disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Broward County, the Our Fund Foundation and the Community Foundation of Broward have joined hands to award a total of $300,000 in grants. These grants, provided through the 2024 LGBTQ+ Social Justice & Equity Fund, aim to support innovative projects that combat these challenges.

A Meaningful Response to Critical Times

David Jobin, president and CEO of The Our Fund Foundation, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The LGBTQ+ community is in an extremely vulnerable position with continual attacks and political and social forces attempting to revive discriminatory policies.” Jobin sees the LGBTQ+ Social Justice & Equity Fund as a crucial step towards addressing these challenges, thanks to the support of backers who understand the urgency of the situation.

Collaborative Efforts for Positive Change

The partnership between the Our Fund Foundation and the Community Foundation of Broward, formed in 2022, aims to create a more informed and empathetic environment for the LGBTQ+ population. By combining resources and expertise, the foundations strive to benefit not only the LGBTQ+ community but all residents of Broward County.

The 2024 LGBTQ+ Social Justice & Equity Fund Grant Recipients

Ten nonprofit organizations were selected as grant recipients, each thoroughly vetted by a joint selection committee. These organizations will receive between $29,000 and $50,000 to support their projects.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward (BIG Pride) -The BIG Pride mentoring program connects LGBTQ+ youth to a caring adult, community resources, events & activities to help build a support network.

BLINC (Black LGBTQ+ Liberation, Inc.) – BLINK will provide operational support to more effectively fulfill their mission to help LGBTQ+ Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) in South Florida lead happier and healthier lives.

Equality Florida Institute – Equality Florida will continue to claw back lost progress for LGBTQ+ youth in Broward County Public Schools.

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society PRIDE Month Exhibit – FLHS will create, install and market a PRIDE month exhibit celebrating the South Florida LGBTQ+ community.

Keshet-Broward County LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Belonging – Keshet educates and trains Jewish institutional leaders to build communities of LGBTQ+ belonging in Broward County.

Museum of Discovery & Science – MODS will provide inclusive training and community engagement that builds bridges to understanding and acceptance of Broward’s LGBTQ+ community.

PRISM FL Student Ambassador Program – The PRISM Student Ambassador Program (P-SAP) in FL is a network of GSAs and other LGBTQ+ student organizations empowering the next generation of leaders.

SAVE Foundation Be Election Ready (BER) – The BER Project recruits and trains LGBTQ+ people to have meaningful conversations with Broward residents to ensure they’re ready to vote in the 2024.

Stonewall National Museum & Archives – Stonewall is to recreate Stonewall Inn/uprising June 29, 1969 that launched the LGBTQ+ movement inspiring new generations to accept the reigns and fight for equality.

Thinking Cap Theatre – The Thinking Cap Theatre is an 8-month creative and educational arts project designed to unite, enrich, and empower a historically marginalized LGBTQ+ demographic: women.

Making Strides Together

Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D., President/CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “We are proud to partner with The Our Fund Foundation to make a real difference in the LGBTQ+ community.” Anderson highlighted the importance of volunteer efforts in selecting projects with the potential to change lives, emphasizing the power of collaboration in achieving meaningful outcomes.

Empowering Projects

The grant recipients cover a diverse range of initiatives, including mentoring programs for LGBTQ+ youth, educational projects in schools, historical exhibits celebrating LGBTQ+ pride, and organizations focused on inclusion and acceptance within various communities.

Foundation Sponsorship

Sponsorship for the 2024 LGBTQ Social Justice & Equity Fund came from various funds at both foundations, reflecting a broad base of support for projects aimed at promoting justice and equity for the LGBTQ+ community in Broward County.

About the Foundations

The Our Fund Foundation, established in 2011, is South Florida’s only LGBTQ+ community foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ people in the region. On the other hand, the Community Foundation of Broward, with nearly 40 years of advocacy experience, has awarded over $9 million in grants to support the LGBTQ+ community on various fronts, including education and the arts.

Through collaborative efforts and targeted investments, these foundations continue to make strides towards a more equitable and inclusive future for Broward County’s LGBTQ+ community.
