LGBTQ+ Friendly Places to Visit and Live in Illinois

On its surface, the state of Illinois may not be top of mind for LGBTQ+ friendly places to visit and live other than, say Chicago and its suburbs. After all, it’s part of the midwest and not really thought of as an LGBTQ+ hotspot. But, Illinois is considered one of the more progressive states. And, when you dig a little deeper, you find that there are more places here for the queer community than meet the eye. There are approximately a half a million LGBTQ+ residents in Illinois with the vast majority of those residing in the northern and central parts of the state. Whether it’s Bloomington, Springfield, or somewhere in between, read on as we highlight all of the gay-friendly places to visit and live in The Prairie State.

Best LGBTQ+ Friendly Places in Illinois

Illinois, particularly its urban center, Chicago, embodies the progressive culture that affords the LGBTQ+ community its rights; however, the state is also home to many other towns, cities, and neighborhoods that welcome the queer community.

Chicago

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. No matter how you identify, you feel like you belong. With approximately 7.5% of the adult population identifying as LGBTQ+, it has a significant presence in business and culture. From its legendary Pride events to its claim as home to the first official LGBTQ+ neighborhood in the U.S., Chicago’s nearly 150,000 queer residents create a vibe of inclusivity that’s hard to ignore. And, while you feel it pretty much everywhere, there are a few neighborhoods and suburbs you must check out:

Northalsted (Boystown)

Chicago’s Northalsted neighborhood is the center for LGBTQ+ culture in Illinois. Formerly known as Boystown (yes, it was once a gay man’s mecca, and to a lesser degree still is), Northalsted is one of the first neighborhoods in the United States to designate itself as an LGBTQ+ district. With an endless array of restaurants, bars, and clubs, Northalsted remains home to LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Northalsted also hosts the Chicago Pride Parade, one of the largest pride parades in the world.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Northalsted

• Sidetrack: Sidetrack is the most famous gay bar in Northalsted and all of Chicago. The bar is popular for its nightlife and drag shows.
• Hydrate Nightclub: Shirtless men, dance music, and great drinks, best describe Hydrate Nightclub. If it’s a late night dance club you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place.
• The Center on Halsted: Where people go when they need emotional, physical, and psychological support, the community center organizes activism efforts, educates, and hosts events that bring the community together.

Andersonville (AKA Girlstown)

Located just to the north of Northalsted, and about 2 miles from Wrigley Field is Northalsted’s “sister” neighborhood, Andersonville. Once a quiet Scandinavian neighborhood, Andersonville is now one of Chicago’s most welcoming areas for the gay community, especially lesbians, thus earning the name “Girlstown.”

Its independent shops, restaurants, and community spaces have become fixtures. LGBTQ+ owned businesses like Women & Children First focus on books, events, and creating safe spaces for the queer community.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Andersonville

• Smartbar: Smartbar regularly hosts LGBTQ+ events, including drag shows, karaoke nights, and star-studded live performances. It offers a “beyond the bar” experience, with a high-tech sound system that electrifies the atmosphere.
• SoFo Tap: An LGBTQ+ friendly vibe, SoFo Tap is the choice for a night of karaoke and dancing.
• Rattleback Records: An independent LGBTQ+ owned music store, Rattleback is a must for music lovers. It hosts events, including intimate music shows that attract an LGBTQ+ crowd.

If you visit Andersonville in June, look for the Midsommarfest Annual Street Festival. While not an LGBTQ+ event, the festival welcomes LGBTQ+ community for live performances and drag shows.

For food, you can drive to the many LGBTQ+ friendly cafes and restaurants like First Slice Pie Café, Brunch Café, and Nighthawk.

Rogers Park

Rogers Park sits at the northern edge of Chicago, a little further out but still connected by trains, buses, and car-friendly streets. The murals, theaters, and local galleries add some flair, while the restaurants and shops reflect the neighborhood’s character.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Rogers Park

• The Glenwood: The Glenwood is decades old and one of the best LGBTQ+ friendly bars in Rogers Park. It’s incredibly welcoming to visitors and residents who express themselves beyond the traditional norms and often host drag shows, karaoke nights, and other themed events.
• Lula Café: An artsy community, Lula café prides itself on its inclusivity and progressive values. It’s a must-visit if you are ever in Rogers Park.
• The Leather Archives & Museum: The museum is dedicated to LGBTQ+ leather history and covers kinks like BDSM, fetishism, queer culture, and many other out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

Lakeview

Lakeview, which includes Northalsted, is one of Chicago’s most LGBTQ+ friendly neighborhoods. Its welcoming vibe and safe atmosphere make it an excellent hotspot for the queer community.

• The Second Unitarian Church of Chicago: For the LGBTQ+ Christian, what’s better than a place to worship? A place that accepts members of the pride community.

Evanston

Twenty minutes from Chicago and bordering Lake Michigan, you find the college town of Evanston. It’s here that Northwestern University takes center stage. The city brings together a mix of residents, including a large LGBTQ+ community.

With food, pubs, bars, and views of the skyline, its vision is “to create the most livable city in America by celebrating the diversity of its residents. “ Lakefront parks and beaches invite you to relax or join in events happening throughout the year.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Evanston

• The Evanston Public Library: For lovers of books, the Evanston Public Library is where you will find LGBTQ+ books and resources. The library also has a history of supporting LGBTQ events like Pride Month.

Forest Park

Forest Park’s proximity to LGBTQ+neighborhoods in Chicago influence its inclusive philosophy. There aren’t businesses with specific LGBTQ+ interests, but many inclusive spots do exist. If you find yourself in Forest Park, check out the Forest Park Public Library for some LGBTQ+ books.

Oak Park

Oak Park is a community that actively supports and celebrates its LGBTQ+ residents. The village has a history of promoting equality, having amended its Human Rights Ordinance in 1989 to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Sitting just outside the western edge of Chicago, Oak Park offers one of the largest municipalities in Cook County. Here, you get the best of both worlds—plenty of space to stretch out in an LGBTQ+ friendly suburban setting, with the perks of Chicago just a short drive away. You’ll find parks and green spaces perfect for picnics, a casual walk, and local shops and restaurants. It’s where you can settle in and feel like part of a community.

Beyond Chicago

Illinois has other LGBTQ+ welcoming towns beyond the city of Chicago. From charming small towns to mid-sized cities, these destinations give you great opportunities for community and connection.

Rockford

If you’re looking for an “up and coming” city outside of Chicago, Rockford, Illinois’ third-largest city, is where the LGBTQ+ community continues to grow. Home of The Peaches, a professional All-American Girls Baseball League team made famous in the movie A League of Their Own, may not yet rival Chicago in its cultural footprint, but it’s close.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Rockford

• The Office Niteclub: Rockford’s LGBTQ+ bar and entertainment venue, the oldest gay bar in Illinois, hosts karaoke events, themed nights, and drag shows. Be sure to check out the dancing cage in the back room.
• Midway Village Museum: If you’re a fan of the movie A League of Their Own, you don’t want to miss the Midway Village Museum. Along with a journey through the city’s history, is the “Girls of Summer” exhibit, celebrating the Rockford Peaches, the women’s baseball team featured in the movie.
• Baker Street Burgers: With a motto of “Be nice or leave,” the culture at Baker Street Burgers is one of inclusivity. Serving up some of the best burgers in Rockford, be sure to add a side of bacon parmesan tater tots to your order.
• Maze Books: Community-focused independent bookstore with both new and used books, Maze Books is designed to make reading accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Be sure to check out their courtyard out back for some relaxing zen.
• J.R. Kortman Center for Design: A gay-owned shop and gallery in downtown Rockford where you find an eclectic mix of fun and creative gift and household items. Head upstairs to the Kortman Gallery, where rotating art exhibitions showcase talent from across the globe.

DeKalb

DeKalb’s connection to Northern Illinois University (NIU) adds to its LGBTQ+ friendliness as a place to live. NIU has resources like the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center and an LGBTQ+ housing community. Campus Pride recently added NIU to its 2023 Best of the Best LGBTQ+ friendly Colleges and Universities List. The city’s diverse cultural scene and a community that supports inclusivity make it a great place to visit or live.

Aurora

Located 40 miles from Chicago, Aurora is slowly becoming a hotspot for the LGBTQ+ community. Like Northalsted, Aurora hosts its annual Aurora Pride Parade to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride. Aurora’s inclusivity influences public housing policies and education. If you’re looking to settle down, Aurora is a relatively progressive and welcoming city.

Galena

With its motto “Amazing for All,” Galena Country (as the locals call it) invites you to its welcoming and inclusive community. Discover a growing LGBTQ+ presence here, with gay-owned businesses, like the Jail Hill Inn, Galena Bakehouse, and the Aldrich Guest House, award-winning bed-and-breakfasts, and women-owned shops lining the small-town USA vibe of Main Street. The town’s progressive mindset creates a safe space for all. With its 19th century architecture and scenic beauty, Galena gives a sense of serenity and nostalgia.

As an LGBTQ+ couple or single traveler, Galena is an ideal getaway. The Mississippi River running through Galena’s west, creates a setting where you can enjoy outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking, where you are welcomed and safe.

• Miss Kitty’s Grape Escape: Located in downtown Galena, Miss Kitty’s Grape Escape is an LGBTQ+ friendly wine and martini lounge where specialty martinis, wines, and craft beers are always on the menu. Weekly events include the Build Your Own Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar, Miss Kitty’s Quiz Show, and live music from Thursday to Sunday.
• Galena Bakehouse: Serving up fresh, made-from-scratch, pastries, empanadas, and locally roasted coffee, Galena Bakehouse is a grab and go bakery on Main Street. LGBTQ+ owned, it’s the perfect place to enjoy delicious bites and good vibes.

The Quad Cities

Locally known as “The QC,” the Quad Cities is a “bi-state, Iowa and Illinois region of four cities with the Mississippi River as its front porch.” Two of these cities, Moline and Rock Island, are in Illinois, while the other two are in Iowa.

Rock Island, IL, sits 175 miles west of Chicago and has plenty for the LGBTQ+ community if you’re considering making Illinois your home. The neighborhoods here are welcoming, with affordable housing that suits every taste—historic homes, downtown condos, modern builds in the city center, or tucked-away spots in the woods.

Rock Island’s Downtown, known as “The District,” is filled with art galleries, theaters, nightclubs, coffee shops, and restaurants. If you love the outdoors or staying active, there are golf courses, parks, bike paths, and even a marina.

A melting pot of traditions, languages, and customs, Moline’s neighborhoods roll out the welcome mat for everyone. Floreciente, shaped by Hispanic heritage, is where you can enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, admire colorful street art, and experience a welcoming atmosphere rooted in cultural pride. Olde Towne invites you to explore its history through architecture and landmarks, giving you a peek into the city’s past. Uptown brings a fresh energy with its blend of homes, businesses, and recreational spaces, where new developments and community events add to the neighborhood’s growing LGBTQ+ appeal.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in the Quad Cities

• Clock, Inc. LGBTQ Community Center: Clock provides services including support groups, counseling, educational training, workshops, and community events to create a safe and inclusive environment in the Quad Cities.

Champaign-Urbana

Champaign-Urbana, two cities so historically and geographically connected, they had to become a supercity. What else is intertwined with this progressive city? Inclusivity. Maybe not as much as Chicago, but the city has plenty of LGBTQ+ friendly businesses and institutions.

Home to the University of Illinois, Champaign has plenty for LGBTQ+ individuals when looking for your next place to settle – or next place to visit. Paired with its nearby sister city, Urbana, the area combines college-town energy with a local arts scene, great food, and a community vibe that feels approachable and genuine.

More than 40 locally-owned eateries bring fresh, farm-sourced ingredients to your table, making dining out a farm-to-table experience. Neighborhoods throughout both cities are welcoming, with no single area claiming the rights to the LGBTQ+ community. Champaign-Urbana creates a setting where you can truly feel at home regardless of how you identify.

• Anthem: Bringing energy and fun to the LGBTQ+ scene in downtown Champaign, Anthem hosts themed nights, live performances, and throwback music events. Open Thursday thru Sunday, it’s a welcoming space where you can sip, socialize, and dance the night away.

Springfield

The state capital of Illinois, and its second largest city, Springfield is located near Lake Springfield and the Sangamon River along Route 66. Yes, THAT Route 66, made famous by the song, Get Your Kicks on Route 66.

Home to Abraham Lincoln, it’s a city known for its friendly people, a smaller, yet active and growing LGBTQ community and plenty to see and do. Unlike some of the bigger cities like Chicago, there is no “gayborhood” per se. So, finding the neighborhood where you want to live is more a matter of personal preference and budget. The good news is, you really can’t go wrong no matter where you choose to love.

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Springfield

• Clique: Referred to as “the only LGBTQ+ bar in the city,” gay-owned Clique is where karaoke nights, themed events, drag shows, and great drinks all come together. Its friendly vibe and welcoming crowd make it a mainstay of Springfield’s nightlife scene.

Bloomington-Normal

Known as “the twin cities,” Bloomington-Normal is home to Illinois State University. While smaller than Chicago, it shines in its embrace of inclusivity. You won’t find many LGBTQ+ owned or focused businesses, but what you do find is that its residents are warm, welcoming, and progressive – to a certain extent.

• The Bistro: The oldest and only gay bar, The Bistro has been a cornerstone of downtown Bloomington’s nightlife for over 20 years. Known for its drag shoes, live bands, and dance nights, it’s where the queer community meets and hangs out.

Peoria

Due to its small size, Peoria may not be your first thought when considering LGBTQ+ places to live or visit in Illinois. But if your plan is to move to Illinois, buy a house, and settle down, and you have a limited budget with which to work, Peoria is your best bet. 

LGBTQ+ Places to Visit in Peoria

• Lit on Fire Books: Recognized as the “Best Small Business” in 2021 by Peoria Magazine, gay-owned Lit on Fire Books is the happening spot for the LGBTQ+ community. Here, you can browse a mix of new and used books while enjoying a cup of locally brewed coffee.
• Sparkys: Your typical dive bar, Sparky’s Bar & Grille is an LGBTQ+ friendly neighborhood favorite. It’s got a laid-back vibe with pool tables, karaoke nights, and live sports on TV.
• Club Diesel: Open seven nights a week, it’s the city’s longest-running nightclub. With a spacious dance floor, incredible lighting, and regular events, including drag shows and themed parties, it’s a welcoming night spot for the LGBTQ+ community.
• Peoria Proud: While Peoria Proud is not an actual place, it’s an organization dedicated to supporting members of the LGBTQ+ community through advocacy, education, and social services. They also support the Peoria Area Transgender Support Group – a group that helps LGBTQ+ members through gender transition and other medical-related issues common with members.

Hospitals and Healthcare Institutions to Explore as an LGBTQ+ Visitor in Illinois

While the healthcare institutions in the United States have miles to go when it comes to inclusivity and equality, states like Illinois continue to lead the way. For example, Howard Brown Health in Chicago offers LGBTQ+ specialized services like mental health support, HIV care, and hormone therapy.

Equality Illinois is an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization that fights for the equal treatment of the queer community, especially when it comes to healthcare policies. Beyond healthcare, Equality Illinois provides resources and support to the queer community as they navigate their rights and expectations within Illinois’ educational system.

Organization to Visit in Illinois for LGBTQ+ Education and Activism

Places like the Center on Halsted and Equality Illinois are excellent for visitors to learn more about LGBTQ+ culture, values, civil rights, and activism. Both organizations are located in Chicago.

The Trevor Project

The Chicago chapter of the Trevor Project is dedicated to preventing suicide in the LGBTQ+ community by providing crisis intervention that includes educational programs, mental wellness counseling, and a 24/7 helpline. For visitors navigating a new state, it can be overwhelming. The Trevor Project (Chicago Chapter) is where the community meets people, makes friends, accesses professional support, and gets the education and resources needed to aid those living in the U.S. as an LGBTQ+.

The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance

For LGBTQ+ members looking to settle down and raise children in Illinois, the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance is an organization to visit. Located in Chicago, the organization provides resources and training for parents and school staff, ensuring that LGBTQ+ youth learn in a safe, bully-free, and inclusive environment.

Legal Protections for LGBTQ+ Community in Illinois

Illinois is considered progressive and has become one of the leading states promoting equality and inclusivity. In 2013, the state legalized same-sex marriage. Illinois also passed non-discrimination laws that ensured that members of the LGBTQ+ community were not denied accommodations or jobs because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Illinois has also taken steps to protect the transgender community, from being one of the first states to legalize name and gender change on official documents without the need for gender-affirming surgeries. Illinois also enacted gender identity protections in areas such as housing and healthcare. Specific institutions like Howard Brown Health in Chicago are LGBTQ+ friendly and provide services like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and gender-affirming surgeries.

While commendable, the blue state can improve LGBTQ+ protection outside of urban areas like Chicago and ensure, through policies, that the LGBTQ+ community is treated with dignity and respect. All of which are rights, not privileges.

From Chicago’s Northalsted area to small towns like Galena, Illinois has plenty to see, do, and experience for the queer community.
