Aaron Carter, a former child-star, came out as bisexual in an open letter posted to his Twitter account, reports Luke Morgan Britton on NME.com.

Carter stated, “This doesn’t bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off of me.”

He added that he has been attracted to men and women since age 13, and finished the letter with a Boy George quote: “I never felt as though I didn’t belong, I just acted as though I did.”

Born at Tampa General Hospital on December 7, 1987, Carter is the younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, and began his career as a singer and actor at age seven.

Carter later thanked his fans for their support on Twitter. While some fans mistakenly tweeted that Carter had come out as gay, others were quick to correct them and point out the difference between being bisexual and gay.

Carter also recently broke up with his girlfriend Madison Parker. Some speculated that Parker had broken up with Carter because he came out, since news of the split broke the day after his open letter. However, Carter quickly clarified that the two had made “a very amicable split” a week prior to his coming out.

Last week, Carter performed in front of a crowd of fans and supporters at Hamburger Mary’s in Brandon, FL, an LGBTQ-inclusive establishment, with locations throughout the region.
