Championing the cause of gender affirmation and societal change, the Jacksonville-based LBGTQ+ organization, The Queer Trans Project (QTP), shines its light of hope and empowerment on and within the LGBTQ+ community. An initiative of compassion and advocacy, it works to break down the barriers faced by queer and trans individuals through innovative programs and services. The project’s foundation lies in its commitment to inclusivity, equity, and promoting a more accepting world. Read on to learn more about this much-needed organization, and the amazing work it does in and for the LGBTQ+ community.

Mission and Vision

At its core, the Queer Trans Project is a Black-led and Trans-led initiative that prioritizes the provision of gender-affirming resources to queer and trans individuals globally. One of the project’s goals is to instill confidence and power within these communities, encouraging them to promote social change. By addressing urgent needs and combating dysphoria, QTP promotes a dignified, safe, and private living environment for all, while empowering individuals to embrace their identities fully.

The Four Pillars

QTP is grounded in four pillars that define its approach to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. They underscore their dedication to inclusivity, authentic representation, integrity, and community support, steering the organization as it caters to the diverse needs and stories within the community.

Authentic Representation

Ensuring that narratives and voices from within the community are front and center in all programs and communications, authentic representation moves beyond “check-the-box inclusivity” to meaningful engagement with the multifaceted nature of queer and trans identities.

Community Rooted

The community-rooted pillar highlights the Queer Trans Project’s commitment to grounding its work in the needs, desires, and experiences of the queer and trans community itself. This close connection to the community supports a sense of ownership and engagement.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

Guiding the Queer Trans Project in creating spaces, resources, and programs that are welcoming and accessible to all regardless of identity, ability, or background, the focus is on inclusivity and accessibility to eliminate barriers that might prevent participation. These can be either physical, financial, social, or psychological.

Honesty & Integrity

To assure that all actions, communications, and decisions are conducted with transparency, accountability, and ethical consideration, honesty and integrity builds trust within the community, its allies, partners, and the broader public.

Empowering Through Programs

As society becomes more divided, LGBTQ+ people are fighting harder than ever for acceptance, equality, and their basic human rights. In the middle of all this, the Queer Trans Project emerges as a light in the darkness with free, accessible resources that affirm gender identity as well as support and uplift the community.

Build-A-Queer Kits

Build-A-Queer Kits are fully customizable kits and include a number of gender-affirming items including binders, packers, bras, and makeup to empower individuals to express their authentic selves. To remove the financial barrier and ensure that every individual can access the tools they need to express their authentic selves, the kits are free of charge, including shipping.

Gender-Affirming Care Flights

Providing complimentary flights to individuals seeking gender-affirming care, QTP partners with a volunteer pilot program. Gender-affirming care flights facilitate access to medical care, consultations, and surgeries necessary for the transitions of those who might otherwise be unable to afford or access such services.

QTP Loveline

The QTP Loveline is a rapid response, healing justice initiative using pre-recorded messages of affirmation and encouragement from the queer community to the queer community. Providing emotional and psychological support, it serves as a reminder to the community that love is the core of who they are. And in that love is their power.

Building Community and Visibility

The Queer Trans Project plays a major role in the visibility and cohesion of the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. By fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding, QTP contributes to breaking down stereotypes while promoting a more inclusive society. Their initiatives serve as reminders  of the importance of solidarity, respect, and empathy in the face of adversity.

With each passing day, the need for QTP’s services grows, as does the importance of support from the broader community. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, there are numerous ways to contribute to their mission. The project’s emphasis on community involvement and the power of individual contributions underscores the role that each of us can play in advancing the cause of gender affirmation and LGBTQ+ rights.

Overcoming Challenges: The Path Forward

Despite its successes, the Queer Trans Project faces ongoing challenges, from combating societal prejudice to securing adequate funding. The project’s commitment to expanding access to its services, as evidenced by its efforts to secure partnerships for additional resources, reflects its dedication to overcoming these obstacles. As QTP looks to the future, it remains focused on enhancing its programs, reaching more individuals in need, and continuing its work from the frontlines of trans justice.

QTP’s efforts extend beyond individual support to tackle broader issues of gender and racial justice. Recognizing the intersecting challenges faced by black indigenous people of color (BIPOC) in the LGBTQ+ community, the project prioritizes their needs and advocates for systemic change. This dual focus on gender and racial justice is pivotal in addressing the discrimination and barriers that queer and trans individuals of color face.

The grassroots approach to funding and support adopted by the Queer Trans Project is an example of the power of community-driven initiatives. By relying on donations, volunteer efforts, and partnerships with organizations like G2CB for binder donations, QTP underscores the significance of collective action in achieving trans liberation.

The Queer Trans Project: A Legacy of Empowerment

The Queer Trans Project is a pioneering force for change, embodying the principles of empathy, inclusivity, and activism. Through its comprehensive programs and its unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community, QTP not only addresses immediate needs but also sows the seeds for a more equitable and understanding world.
